Common Ticks Found in Arizona

Brown dog ticks and American dog ticks are the species most often encountered in Arizona. Both are hard ticks, meaning they carry a shield-like plate called a scutum on top of the body, and both prefer dogs but will bite people when given the opportunity.

Brown Dog Tick Identification

Larvae measure about 1/32 inch, while unfed adults reach roughly 1/8 inch. After a blood meal, an adult can swell to approximately 1/2 inch and turn a grayish-blue color.

Unlike most local species, the brown dog tick can complete its entire life cycle indoors and survive up to 18 months without feeding. A single female may lay up to 4,000 eggs around kennels, ledges, baseboards, and cracks, which is why an overlooked indoor infestation can expand quickly.

Tick-Borne Illness in Arizona

Rocky Mountain spotted fever can cause muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Antibiotics are often used when the illness is caught early, so anyone who develops symptoms after a suspected bite should contact a medical professional promptly.

Nevada has four recognized tick species, but the Rocky Mountain wood tick is the only one considered common statewide. The black-legged tick, the only Nevada species known to transmit Lyme disease, is uncommon across the state.

Brown dog ticks are well suited to hot, dry conditions and are the only Nevada species that can breed indoors. That makes them a primary concern around Las Vegas homes with dogs, pet bedding, or kennel areas. Nevada’s general tick season runs from April through September, though indoor activity doesn’t always follow the outdoor calendar.
