There are two types of termites in Arizona that can damage homes. Although not as voracious as in some wetter parts of the country, both species can do serious damage. The important thing to know is that the treatment to remove them is different, depending on which type of termites you are dealing with.
They eat cellulose material, including wood, plants, carpet, insulation, cardboard, sheetrock paper, fabric and animal feces. These termites need moisture to survive so our dry climate helps contain this species from doing too much damage. These termites live in both soil and wood. One good way to detect them is to watch for mud tubes which, many times, can be spotted in drywall.
Unlike subterranean termites, drywood termite colonies do not need contact with moisture in the soil nor any other water source. They can be difficult to detect because their colonies reside entirely inside the wood, and therefore, no mud tunnels will be seen. Instead, it is best to watch for fecal pellets, which are kicked out of the colonies by workers, directly below where the infestation is taking place.

- All food particles and debris needs to be vacuumed or swept up prior to K-9 inspection.
- Beds should be stripped of all linens and blankets. Linens should be placed in a large bag for inspection and as to not transfer pest issue throughout the home.
- Dogs, Cats, or Birds should be away from the affected area and moved to a safe place such as a bathroom or outside prior to inspection with K-9. If at all possible all animals should be out of site and hearing distance of the service k-9.
- Residents should give K-9 and handler space while inspection is taking place (for better work performance)
- The less loose clothing or shoes on the floor the better.
- Well lit rooms would be helpful
- All furniture should be moved about 2 feet from the wall.
In order for our K-9 Teams to provide the best possible inspection we ask that before and during service, you reduce the amount of clutter in your unit as much as possible. Clutter in your unit provides bed bugs a safe place to hide that we are unable to inspect and cannot treat with pesticide. If the clutter in your unit is not reduced or eliminated, additional services may be needed to eliminate the bed bug infestation. If you fail to complete the following requests it may be difficult or impossible to eliminate the problem.
Clutter can be defined as any item that restricts movement in any room or excessive amounts of personal items that hinders the inspection of the unit/and or home. Some examples of clutter include but are not restricted to: excessive amounts of furniture (for a list of acceptable amounts of furniture in your apartment, please see your management), clothes strewn on the floor, random items placed around the perimeter of the room, overly packed closets, etc… As long as a cluttered situation exists, it prevents us from completing our standard bed bug inspection and therefore can extend the number of services it takes to eliminate the bugs from your unit/and or home. Although there is no easy, straightforward way to address clutter, please eliminate clutter by any means possible. These methods include: cleaning, disposal of items in an outdoor trash receptacle, storage units, also any food debris, and pet messes etc… Please be aware that if you store items in a storage unit, they need to be inspected for the presence of bed bugs prior to storing them in the storage unit and before they are brought back into your apartment/home. Bed bugs can live on these stored items for up to a year and if they are not inspected prior to bringing them back into the unit, they can reinfest your unit. For additional help with off-site storage, please contact your management office.
Incorrect![]() A Cluttered Environment |
Correct![]() An Uncluttered, organized environment. |
In order for Burns Pest Elimination to provide the best possible Inspection we ask that before we arrive you place all loose clothing found throughout the living establishment in plastic bags and sealed tightly. Loose clothing is defined as any piece of clothing found outside of a dresser or closet. After our service, you may also find bags of launderable items that we left behind that should be washed and/or dried on a hot cycle along with the items you bagged as soon as possible. Please discard of the plastic bags in an outdoor trash receptacle after laundering. If you fail to complete the following requests it may complicate the control effort and lengthen the time required to achieve control.
Loose clothing and other fabrics associated with the bed/sofa present a place for bed bugs to hide. We cannot treat clothing due to prolonged contact with skin. Our company appreciates your cooperation when you maintain a well organized and clean work environment so that we can effectively address the problem at hand. Bed bugs have a low tolerance for heat so laundering bagged clothing and/or drying them in a hot cycle (140oF or hotter) will kill any live bugs as well as their eggs. After removing the clothes, the bag should be immediately sealed and discarded outside the premises in a trash receptacle. If an item cannot be washed in a washing machine it can be taken to a dry cleaning facility (it is recommended that you explain to the dry cleaner that the items may have been exposed to bed bugs).
Incorrect![]() Avoid Situations like this! |
Correct![]() Instead, bag clothes like this! |
In order for Burns Pest Elimination to provide the best possible service we ask that before we arrive, you remove all of the contents within the closets specified on the client cooperation form that was provided to you by the technician. Contents include items placed on the floor, hanging clothes and articles stored on shelving units. Once removed, do not move these contents into other rooms before they are inspected by our technician. Please leave all that is removed in front of the closet. If you fail to complete the following requests it may be difficult and maybe impossible to eliminate the problem.
Articles kept in closets provide bed bugs places to hide. We can not treat these closets properly due to the presence of these items and therefore the bugs are never eliminated. By removing these articles from within the closets, it eliminates hiding places and helps us inspect and treat the house/apartment effectively. Please do not move the items that were previously stored in the closet into any other room in the house. If these articles contain bed bugs and you move them into rooms where bed bugs are not present, you can infest new rooms and spread the population throughout the establishment. After our technician inspects the articles, they can then be placed back into the closet.
Incorrect![]() A cluttered closet |
Correct![]() An empty closet with all the contents in front |
In order for our K9 Teams to provide the best possible service we ask that before we arrive, you remove all of the contents beneath all beds and do not store anything under the beds in the future. Please leave the contents that were kept under the beds in the bedrooms that they were being stored in. Do not move those contents into other rooms before they are inspected by our technician. If you fail to complete the following requests it may complicate the control effort and lengthen the time required to achieve control.
Articles under the beds provide bed bugs places to hide. We can not treat these articles and therefore the bugs are never eliminated. By removing these articles from under the beds, it eliminates hiding places and helps us treat the house/apartment effectively. Please do not move the items that were previously stored under the bed into any other room in the house. If these articles contain bed bugs and you move them into rooms where bed bugs are not present, you can infest new rooms and spread the population throughout the establishment. After our technician inspects the articles, they can then be stored in a safe storage area.

Please read the following information to help your K9 inspection go as smoothly and successfully as possible. For questions about the information below, or for more details about our K9 inspection, please contact us.
General Preparation Tips and Guidelines to be Complete Prior to Inspection
- All food particles and debris should be vacuumed or swept prior to K-9 inspection.
- Beds should be stripped of all linens and blankets. Linens should be placed in a large plastic bag for inspection and to prevent transferring pests throughout the home.
- Dogs, cats, or birds should be outside or kept in a spare bathroom or pantry prior to the arrival of the K-9 inspection team. It is best if all animals can be out of site and hearing distance of the service k-9.
- For an optimal inspection, residents should allow both the K-9 and its handler relative distance to perform the inspection.
- Remove or store excess clutter, clothing or shoes from the floor prior to inspection.
- Rooms with ample lighting are ideal.
- All furniture should be moved about 2 feet away from the wall.
Remove Clutter
Reduce the amount of clutter in your unit as much as possible. Clutter provides bedbugs a safe place to hide, which makes inspection and elimination difficult.
Common items to be moved or removed:
- Excessive amounts of furniture
- Clothes strewn on the floor
- Random items placed around the perimeter of the room
- Overly packed closets, etc…
It is recommended you perform a thorough cleaning or disposal of items in an outdoor trash receptacle prior to the arrival of the K9 team. Bed bugs can live for up to one year without food, so be advised all items temporarily moved to storage outside your unit will require treatment before the can be safely returned to your home.
Bag Clothing
Place all loose clothing, not already stored in your closet or dresser, in tightly sealed plastic bags. After the inspection all washable items (both stored and bagged) should be washed and dried on hot as soon as possible. Doing so will kill any live bugs as well as their eggs. Plastic bags should be discarded in an outdoor trash receptacle after laundering.
Any dry clean only items should be taken to the cleaner in a tightly sealed bag, and the cleaner should be notified of the possibility of bed bug exposure.
Clean Closets & Underneath Beds
Closets and bedrooms previously identified on your client cooperation form should be thoroughly cleaned. Remove all of contents within the closets and beneath the beds specified, including items placed on the floor, hanging clothes and articles stored on shelving units.
Please do not move the items previously stored in the closet or beneath the bed into any other room in the house. Doing so can put other rooms in your home at risk for infestation.
Taking the proper steps to prepare for your K9 inspection can be key to a successful bed bug elimination. If you fail to complete these steps, it may be difficult or impossible to completely eliminate the problem.
For questions or concerns, please contact us.

To us, you are more than just a customer. We value our working relationships and business partnerships, and we appreciate the trust you place in us to get the job done right. You and your peace of mind are important to us and, we strive to satisfy all your pest elimination needs.
Look at what some of our most valued customers are saying about Burns Pest Elimination and our services:
I am writing because I hired your company to eliminate rodents in my attic. The serviceman was here the same day I called and a few days later, when some of the little guys were caught, and starting to smell bad, a technician came out immediately and took them away. What wonderful service! I especially want to compliment you on my technician, Vince Mada Jr, from the north valley. He is a very polite and personable young man, and has done a fabulous job for me! He is very dedicated to doing a good job and takes the time necessary to do it! Sometimes when you hire a company, you worry about the people they send into your home, but Vince is such a good representative for your company, I am always happy when he comes to the door.
Thank you so much for the excellent service!
-Sharon M.
Good Morning,
I wanted to take a moment to let you know how amazing your employees are. Often times compliments seem to slip through the cracks and we are too concerned with complaints. I wanted to take the time to let you know how much I appreciate the "team" that helps me out at our community every day. I have used Burns since 2001 at various companies and properties and the reason I continue to use Burns is because of the excellent customer service. Adam Greco has always gone above and beyond for us to ensure we are taken care of. He builds great relationships with his customers and teaches his team to do the same. My sales rep Nick ensures all of our scheduling is on track and nothing slips through the cracks. My bed bug crew, Clay, Beckie and Brandon are so thorough and accommodating to our needs. Russell my weekly tech is very professional and thorough. Not to mention everyone is always so nice. I have not had one experience where any of these employees appeared to be having a "bad day". They are always professional and friendly. This crew goes above and beyond by holding a Bed Bug Seminar for me quarterly to help me educate my residents. This holds them late in the evening and yet not one complaint. They are always willing to do it for me. This is yet another example of excellent customer service. This type of customer service is extremely hard to find.
I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that we appreciate all you and your team at Burns do for us. Without vendors like you, we would not be successful at what we do everyday
Kind Regards,
-Shandra M.| Community Manager

Profesional Cricket Elimination Services
Phylum, Arthropoda; Class, Insecta; Order, Orthoptera
Identifying Features
Appearance (Morphology)
- Brown to black
- Front wing varying in length, covering half to entire abdomen
- Antennae about as long as distance from head to end of abdomen
- Wings held flat over body
- Hind wings folded and hidden under leathery front wings
Adult Males and Females
Female with long ovipositor (ventrally attached) in rear (may appear as two pieces); both sexes have cerci (segmented, tail-like appendages attached dorsally). The wings are fully extended over the abdomen. Some species may not have wings.
Immatures (different stages)
Immatures look like adults, but do not have fully developed wings. Older nymphs may show development of wing pads. The female's ovipositor begins to show before it is an adult and increases in length with each successive molt.
Natural History
Food
Crickets are omnivores and scavengers feeding on organic materials, as well as decaying plant material, fungi, and seedling plants.
Habitat
Crickets live under rocks and logs in meadows, pastures and along roadsides. Many are nocturnal.
Predators
Spiders, some wasps, ground beetles, birds, small rodents and lizards are cricket predators.
Interesting Behaviors
To attract mates, males produce a sound made by rubbing their forewings against each other. The resulting chirping sound is picked up by the female's ears on her front legs. The chirp sounds are different for each species so that individuals can find their own species. Females lay eggs in the soil with their ovipositor.
Impact on the Ecosystem
Positive
Crickets breakdown plant material, renewing soil minerals. They are also an important source of food for other animals.
Negative
Crickets may injure seedlings and large numbers can be destructive. Males songs can be quite loud.

If you have ever had the unfortunate pleasure of being stung by one of these critters, you know the pain that comes along with a sting. A bee sting is a very serious health and safety threat to both people and animals. Reactions do vary from person to person. Some people are able to withstand many stings at once, while others with an allergic reaction cannot handle even one.
Since the late 1990’s, Africanized bees have become common in Phoenix and surrounding areas. It is very difficult to tell the difference between an Africanized and European bee. Burns Pest Elimination is here to arm you with the tools to identify an Africanized colony:
- Show great defensiveness when in a resting swarm.
- Swarm more frequently and travel farther than other types of bees.
- Aggressively guard the hive.
- Is more likely to live in ground cavities than the European bee.
- In a response to stress, the entire colony will leave the hive and relocate.
- Migrates as part of a seasonal response to lowered food supply.
- Deploy in greater numbers for defense and pursue threats over long distances from the hive.
- Sting in large numbers, more aggressive.
Because of the similarities between European and Africanized bees and the health threat they carry, Burns Pest Elimination treats all bees as if we were dealing with the most aggressive. Removal and treatment are handled with utmost safety and care.
- Stay calm and get to a safe indoor location.
- If you have more than 10 stings, or notice any symptoms other than localized pain, itching or swelling, seek immediate medical attention.
- If the stingers are still in the skin, gently remove them with your fingernail, a credit card, or blunt knife. Do not squeeze! This increases the risk of more venom being injected.
- Apply a cold compresses to relieve pain and swelling. Do not apply ice directly to site.
- Itching should subside within a few hours. If itching continues, or if you appear to be having some sort of allergic reaction, see a doctor.
- Allergic reaction symptoms include burning, itching, body swelling, body rash, difficulty breathing, weakness, nausea, shock or unconsciousness.
- If you know that you are allergic to bee stings, consult your doctor about a preventative anti-venom first-aid kit.
-
If you see someone else being stung multiple times, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Termites are similar to cockroaches which are known to be one of the oldest and most successful insects on the earth. Perhaps this long legacy gives termites their astounding tenacity and adaptability. Unlike cockroaches, however, termites exhibit complex and rigid social interactions in a colony. Particular tasks are performed by individuals specialized for the purpose.
- Termite scan be winged or wingless
- Vary in color by species from white to cream-colored and coal black to pale yellow-brown
- Have constant contact with the soil or other above-ground moisture sources
- Approximate size may vary from 1/4 to 3/8 inch long
Subterranean termites are social insects that live in colonies in the soil. These colonies contain three forms: reproductives, workers and soldiers. Subterranean termites derive their nutrition from wood and other material containing cellulose. Their primary moisture source is the soil. Any wood-to-soil contact is a potential site of entry into a home. Termites build long tubes out of mud and fecal material. These mud tubes are called exploratory tubes. Termite tubes are easy to see and are one of the best ways to identify a potential termite infestation. Once a source of wood has been located, termites build more permanent utility or working tubes. The utility tubes serve as a highway running from the underground termite gallery directly to the food source. These working tubes can cover long distances over the foundation of a building or along interior/exterior walls to reach the cellulose on their own.
Liquid Termiticide Applications:
- Non Repellent chemical/odorless and non toxic
- Last multiple years in the soil
- Trenches are dug around the external perimeter of the structure
Premise - It contains the active ingredient Imidoclopridis. It is unique because it not only kills termites on contact, but it also kills them at doses too small to cause immediate death. If a termite comes in contact with a very small amount of Imidocloprid it will become lethargic and forget to eat and feed other termites.
Termidor - The active ingredient is Fipronil. Fipronil is unique in that it can be transferred from one termite to another through contact and trophallaxis (communalfeeding). This allows it to affect more termites than those that contact the chemical directly.
Sentricon - consists of in-ground stations that contain 2 pieces of untreated wood (“monitors”). The stations are on a quarterly schedule to see if termites have invaded or “hit” the monitors. If so, the termites are collected from the monitors and placed inside a tube of bait. The bait then replaces the monitors in the station and the termites must then eat their way out of the bait tube.
- The active ingredient in the Sentricon bait is noviflumuron. It is an insect growth regulator and interferes with the insect’s ability to molt.
- Baits are very environmentally friendly because there is considerably less active ingredients.
-
Generally do not require any drilling of the porch, slab, or foundation walls, so there is not damage to the structure.

Rodents like field mice, house mice, pack rats, Norway rats, and roof rats are often quite a nuisance when they invade your home or property. Often destructive to building and vegetation, rodent infestations can be a real concern for your health. Their nests and droppings can cause severe allergic reactions and are known for carrying disease-causing bacteria.
Burns Pest Elimination professionals are experienced in helping you rid your home of these relentless pests. Our rodent control services include:
- Live Traps
- Poison Bait Traps
- Snap Traps
- Long-term extermination plans

There are 36 species of scorpions in Arizona. All species can sting, causing some immediate pain, with little or no local swelling or redness. Only one species of scorpions will cause further medical problems: the Bark Scorpion.

- The Bark Scorpion is one of the smaller species of scorpions
- The color may vary from light tan to a darker brown, depending upon the environment in which it lives
- It is usually between one half and one inch in length
- It lives both outside in wood piles, palm trees, and decorative bark and inside homes or any place dark and cool
- The Bark Scorpion is a climber. It can climb walls and walk across ceilings in your home. It clings to the underside of pieces of bark or wood when you pick them up
- The symptoms you experience are the best indicator other than the bark scorpion sting itself
- Immediate local pain
- Hypersensitivity to touch at the site of the sting
- Numbness and tingling -moving to parts of the body distant from the sting
- Visual disturbances and/or uncoordinated eye movements
- Difficulty swallowing and "swollen tongue" sensation with excessive drooling
- Slurred speech
- Young children may constantly rub their nose and face. This may indicate facial numbness and tingling
- Muscle twitching
- Restlessness and irritability
- Children may appear "hyperactive" with rapid uncontrolled body movements
These symptoms usually occur in the first 2-3 hours. Children under 10 years are more likely to develop severe symptoms. Not all of these signs and symptoms, listed in order of severity, will occur in every person stung.

Pesky birds make bad neighbors. They're noisy, inconsiderate, and are a potential health risk. Bird droppings and bird nests carry various diseases that can be passed on to people and pets. Their nests are home to numerous parasites such as mites, fleas, ticks, and various pathogens.

Roaches are frequently believed to share a common ancestor with termites because of the mutual possession of cellulytic symbiotic protozoa in the gut, but this interpretation has been criticized (Thorne 1990). Like termites, some roach species can digest wood. Although some disagreement has occurred as to their taxonomic classification, cockroaches have been placed in the Orthoptera (with crickets, mantids, and grasshoppers) or in a separate order, the Blattoidea, family Blattida. Approximately 4000-7500 species of cockroaches exist, but only a very small fraction of these species are considered pests (i.e., American, German, Oriental, brown-banded, smokybrown, and Asian). Many species inhabit ant, wasp, termite colony nests, caves, animal burrows, and even mines.
Because cockroaches contaminate food with their excrement and secrete an unpleasant odor which can permeate the indoor environment, these insects are considered by most homeowners and entomologists to be one of the worst household pests. Many individuals develop allergies to these insects. Data from one study showed that 7.5% of 253 normal people showed allergic skin responses to extracts of cockroaches while 28% of 114 allergic people were affected. Allergens present in the feces of the German cockroach can become airborne along with normal house dust. The allergens can then be inhaled from the air or ingested when in contact with food.
Many of the environmental requirements of cockroaches (i.e., high humidity, warmth, and food sources) can be found in a typical home. Cockroaches evolved as scavengers of decaying plant materials, hence they will readily feed on carbohydrates, but they will also feed on a variety of other foods, including paints, wallpaper pastes, and book bindings. Homes also provide shelter and a multitude of warm and humid niches for their survival. Interestingly, some evidence suggests that cockroaches adapted to life with primates because of the discovery of these insects in an orangutan nest.
The lifecycle begins when a mature female cockroach produces an eggcase or ootheca. Females can carry an egg case with them for quite some time, dropping the case wherever it may fall (i.e., in pockets, briefcases, drawers). This habit can lead to the rapid dissemination of these insects, because each ootheca may contain hundreds of eggs which hatch into small versions of the adults, called nymphs. Nymphs can be recognized by the absence of wings, so conspicuously apparent in the adults. Mature cockroach nymphs are almost as large as the adults, but require another molt to reach adulthood.
