Rescue Dogs are Helping in the Fight Against Bed Bugs
Though bed bugs seemed to disappear in the mid-20th century, the persistent pests have made a comeback in recent years. They’re small, lay lots of eggs, and bite you when you’re most vulnerable—while you’re sleeping. Though bed bugs are notoriously good hiders, we have a particularly effective ally in the fight against them: rescue dogs.
  • Taken off the streets - Though the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it is impossible to calculate exactly how many stray dogs are in the United States, the number is easily in the tens of millions. These animals aren’t defective in any way—they’re simply lost and neglected. Luckily, thousands of dogs are taken off the cruel streets and given new lives as bed bug detectors.
  • Put to work - Though we tend to put a lot of stock in our ability to see, sight isn’t too effective when it comes to detecting bed bugs. Luckily, a dog’s heightened sense of smell is ideal for sniffing out bed bugs and their eggs. Of course, finding bed bugs on command takes a lot of specific training.
  • Thoroughly certified - If you’re skeptical of bed bug-sniffing dogs, you should keep in mind that every dog goes through a rigorous certification process which is overseen by an independent third party organization. The most accurate bed bug-sniffing dogs are recertified every three months, to make sure that they don’t get rusty. If you have bed bugs in your home, it’s important that you know about them and get them removed as soon as possible.
