How to Maintain a Bed Bug-Free Home

Fifty years ago, bed bugs were all but eradicated from American soil. But, over the past decade, they have returned with a vengeance. Residents of large cities, such as Phoenix, are especially susceptible to bed bug infestation. Fortunately, bed bug experts have identified methods through which most bed bugs find their way into homes. Here are some ways that you can keep your home free of bed bugs:
Free furniture sometimes comes at the price of a bed bug infestation. If you like to scour the streets of Phoenix during popular move-out times for furniture steals, you are at a higher risk of bringing bed bugs into your home than most. Pest patrol experts recommend against bringing foreign furniture into your home. If you simply cannot resist a piece of used furniture you find, examine it closely for signs of bed bugs and have a bed bug expert treat it before you bring it into your home.
The bed bug’s preferred method of transportation is the suitcase. The next time you return home from a trip, carefully unpack your luggage upon arrival. Wash all machine-washable items in scalding hot water and freeze non-washable items in sealed plastic bags for at least five days. Then, carefully inspect each of your suitcases for bed bugs and call an exterminator if you find any of the blood-sucking critters in your belongings.
In between homes, bed bugs often spend time in office settings. To avoid bringing bed bugs home from work with you, keep jackets and briefcases on personal coat racks, desks, or high tables and avoid using communal storage spaces.
Another important step to take in maintaining a bed bug-free home is to regularly inspect your home for bed bugs and signs that they may be present. Check your mattress, box spring, pillow seams, sheets, walls and bedside furniture for small, flat bugs and dark brown or reddish blood spots.
