Find Out What Attracts Cockroaches in a Home lady and cockroach

Cockroaches are some of the most proliferative and adaptable insects on the planet.  They can eat almost anything (even nonfood items like glue, paint, soap, or paper) and can make a home out of just about any environment. Cockroaches do, however, prefer certain living conditions. To keep your home roach-free—and free of the pathogens they carry with them—you have to rid your home of what attracts and sustains them.

Poor sanitation, especially in areas where food is kept or prepared, is the main reason that cockroaches will infest a home. Leaving food or dirty dishes out overnight gives these nocturnal insects ready and ample food sources. Dog and cat food should be sealed in containers overnight and not left in food bowls. Places that accumulate crumbs and food particles such as behind cabinets and under refrigerators should also be cleaned often to prevent roaches from moving in. Cleaning and organization of the home is the best defense against roach infestation.

Ample dark, humid hiding areas are also very attractive to roaches. Make sure any leaky water sources are repaired, as they are always looking for a place to drink. Loose baseboards and molding strips, cabinets, cupboards, and upholstered furniture are all favorite hiding places of the urban roach. To prevent roaches from hiding in your household, seal cracks in the foundation, piping, floors, walls, or any other possible entrances to the home.

Strong smells attract many pests, including roaches. Piles of trash bags or improperly maintained compost will promptly attract these insects. Making sure your compost is in a sealed bin and taking out your garbage often can help make your home a less desirable home for roaches.

Being aware of what attracts roaches and sustains them can help you make the necessary changes to keep them out of your home. If you have any questions about roach infestations or if you need professional elimination services, call Burns Pest Elimination at (623) 201-4992.
